The other night my wife and I were out to dinner and as we were ordering we got the new age customary question, “Do you have any allergies?” I inserted my normal dad jokes about allergies and EpiPen’s. As most Dad jokes they’re only funny to me and besides the humor that my wife fell in love with is not so humorous anymore. My jokes fell on deaf ears. But, no need to feel sorry for me. I still entertained myself.
The waitress went on to recount her allergy story. She explained how she had allergies. She had a severe peanut allergy. The key word in that sentence was had.
She went on to tell when she was living in Los Angeles that she had friends who had allergies and were able to get rid of them. She said the friends had the belief that the allergy was just in their head meaning it was just a belief they held and that the allergy wasn’t a real aversion or a chink in their DNA. The allergy was just a belief? The opposite would be a belief that they didn’t have any allergy.
She went on to tell the story that a local Shaman was able to help them get rid of their allergy by helping them change their beliefs. Now let me explain a little more about what a Shaman is and isn’t. My definition and experience of what a Shaman is, is they are ancient healers. A Shaman is considered a spiritual guide through energy and emotions.
Online this is what Google says a Shaman is…
a person regarded as having access to, and influence in, the world of good and evil spirits, especially among some peoples of northern Asia and North America. Typically, such people enter a trance state during a ritual, and practice divination and healing, and was able to tap into their unconscious mind.
What are the powers of a shaman?
Shamans claim to gain knowledge and the power to heal by entering into the spiritual world or dimension. Most shamans have dreams or visions that convey certain messages. The shaman may have or acquire many spirit guides, who often guide and direct the shaman in their travels in the spirit world.
I know that sounds frufruy and it was in California, but stay with me for a second.
The waitress told us the result she experienced from going to the Shaman is now she no longer has any allergies. The idea of beliefs driving our actions and results have always fascinated me. A few years ago my wife would watch a documentary Beyond Belief every morning as we were getting ready for work. One of the interviews on the movie talked about the Placebo Effect.
The Placebo Effect is…
a beneficial effect produced by a placebo drug or treatment, which cannot be attributed to the properties of the placebo itself, and must therefore be due to the patient’s belief in that treatment.
In scientific studies this has been attributed with a 40% success rate meaning 40% of the time a patient got better not because of the medicine but because of their own beliefs. I always thought this is awesome that someone could heal themselves by having a belief that something is going to heal them.
The question is in what area or areas of life are your beliefs not serving you? What different results would you have if you changed those beliefs? How can you tap into your unconscious mind and change your beliefs to have different results?
