Nobody in their right mind will tell you that they have a self righteous belief system, right?
OK, to be fair, you might be able to count on one hand the arrogant and self righteous people that you actually know. But remember this is your opinion… do you really think deep down in their core this is who they are?
Because if it were YES you woud be discounting the affect that surroundings have on attitudes. Of which nobody, including YOU, is immune.
We can all agree that the most popular self righteous behavior is Entitlement… the belief that our privileges are actually our rights. When we don’t receive what we feel is rightfully ours we throw a fit or in most cases make excuses and blame others for it. With Entitlement comes confusion because we are unable to separate the difference between a privilege and a right.
Remembetr, we get what we deserve. Just because we have expectations we’re not necessarily entitled to them. You didn’t invent our plumbing system… Did you? If it breaks down believe me you would be pretty ticked off and might even blame someone else. But out of necessity you would eventually find a solution.
Make no mistake our values and beliefs about all things shape what we view as a right or a privilege. The problem resides in the fact that we are looking for FAIRNESS.
Here’s a little secret… Fairness Doesn’t Exist!
What you receive in life boils down to how hard you work, how smart you are, how lucky you are, how you treat others and who you know.
Just because someone else enjoys a privilege it doesn’t give you the right to that same privilege. Comparison ends up fueling Entitlement, and Entitlement takes away the joy of receiving a gift or a favor.
Minimum Entitlement creates Maximum Joy.
As Benjamin Franklin once said, “… in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
